Eucharistic Ministry

A vital ministry within the liturgy of the Mass as well as nourishing the Body of  Christ in the community, is that of extraordinary minister.  The general requirements for an Extraordinary Minister (EM), is to be a Confirmed, practicing Catholic.  Additionally there is parish level training to ensure the proper treatment of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as practices within the particular worship space and sacristy.   Once trained ministers are approved by the Bishop per the parish’s recommendation.

During distribution of Communion at Mass, Extraordinary Ministers assist priest and deacon(s) who are called the Ordinary ministers of the Eucharist.  EM’s not only allow the distribution of Communion to occur within reasonable time limits, they also embody the involvement of the laity in the Eucharistic Community envisioned by Vatican Council II.

Extraordinary Ministers may also engage in ministry to the ‘home bound’, bringing the Consecrated Body of Christ to individuals who are unable to attend Mass.  This ministry to personal homes, nursing and medical facilities, is an essential connection of the recipients to the universal church and the Body of Christ.
